TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- A giant ice shelf the size of 11,000 football fields has snapped free from Canada's Arctic, scientists said.
The mass of ice broke clear 16 months ago from the coast of Ellesmere Island, about 800 kilometers (497 miles) south of the North Pole, but no one was present to see it in Canada's remote north.
Scientists using satellite images later noticed that it became a newly formed ice island in just an hour and left a trail of icy boulders floating in its wake. (Watch the satellite images that clued in ice watchers)
Warwick Vincent of Laval University, who studies Arctic conditions, traveled to the newly formed ice island and could not believe what he saw.
"This is a dramatic and disturbing event. It shows that we are losing remarkable features of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of years. We are crossing climate thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change ahead," Vincent said Thursday.
In 10 years of working in the region he has never seen such a dramatic loss of sea ice, he said.
The collapse was so powerful that earthquake monitors 250 kilometers (155 miles) away picked up tremors from it.
The Ayles Ice Shelf, roughly 66 square kilometers (41 square miles) in area, was one of six major ice shelves remaining in Canada's Arctic.
Scientists say it is the largest event of its kind in Canada in 30 years and point their fingers at climate change as a major contributing factor.

You are 'Person of the Year'
You were named TIME magazine's "Person of the Year" on Saturday for the explosive growth and influence of user-generated Internet sites such as YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. Before I went home for break..
my roommates and I decided to have our own Thanksgiving dinner at CJ's.
The turkey was YumLicious and it was cooked by ME! (I'm the next Top Chef).
We also had Vietnamnese Summer Rolls, cornbread, corn, gravy, and stuffing.
I have to get Pearl to email me photos from our family Thanksgiving lunch.
Afterwards we headed off to "camp out" at Best Buy.
No photos from there but boy it was an adventure.
For 12 hours we staked outside of Best Buy, making friends (with fellow UF alums, brazillian immigrants, etc.), running to the bathroom with strangers, and eating leftover turkey.
We ended up with A LOT of merchandise.
Electronics can make you crazy. BIG TIME.
I'll probably do it again, but not in another 5 years.
I value my sleep very much. :)
I worked my tooshie off at home.
And I'm glad because I made mulah to cover most of my rent. :)
I LOVEEEEE and miss our faithful and sweet customers.
After 10 days, it was time to go home, but
The trip back to Boston was ROUGH.
Plane flew out at 4 and I was due home around 9 after a stop in Philly.
Poor kid infront of me had a tough time on the plane and cried the whole 2.5 hours to Philly.
When I got to Philly I thought I was ready to go...but no an incoming "storm" prevented us from flying for another 2.5 hours.
Exhaustion, headache, small plane caused me to get sick once I landed in Boston.
But I made it back in one piece.
Boston LOVEs its holidays.
And one of the most important events is the tree lightening in Boston Commons,
not quite as big as the tree in NYC's Rockefeller, but this one is from Nova Scotia!
our first snowfall this winter! it lasted for 1.5 hours and flurries thoughout the day.
Monday I got to see my friend Patrick play on the piano for his ensemble.
I have to give it to the kids at Berklee..they know their music.
Wednesday I got her hear my roommate Anna jam on the drums.
She's the coolest drummer.
(Amy you should get on the drums again!) :)
Soon I'm going to get a little sister from the Big Sister/Little Sister program.
Her profile is:
11.5 year old Chinese girl (cantonese)
2 siblings
Lives in Chinatown with both parents, they both work in a restaurant
6 grader
Wants to learn origami
Shy but determained
Loves to bake cookies!
she sounds like a mini me. :)
